The Stephentown Hotel is a historic building that has been in operation since the mid-19th century. The hotel has gone through several owners and renovations throughout its history, but it still retains much of its original charm and character. The hotel features several rooms and suites that have been renovated to offer modern amenities while still maintaining the historic feel of the building.

The Stephentown Hotel was built in the 1860s and officially opened in 1878. Originally known as “The Stephentown House Hotel,” and later known as Mac’s. The Hotel was started by Peter Kushow or (Couchot), the hotel’s first proprietor. The hotel was sold to John F. Cassidy. It was eventually sold to the Morin brothers, Joseph and Olive Morin, who operated the Hotel under “Joe’s Place.” The Hotel competed with the Vanderbilt House, another railroad hotel across the road.

On December 8, 1941, the Hotel was purchased by Emily Morin, from her cousin Joe. Emily Morin operated the hotel and opened a bar on the first floor known as Emily’s, which remained a staple of Stephentown well into the 2000s. The hotel room rate in 1948 was $2 per night! Emily Morin sadly passed away in 1994, with her daughter, Marilyn, taking over operations until 2009. Marilyn has said of Emily, “My mother was its legend. At 4 feet 10 inches she controlled it like a giant.” According to Marilyn, Emily operated the hotel and bar for 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas Day.

The Hotel was sold in 2009 to Miguel Melendez and later to Jennifer and Tim Austin, who opened the Stephentown Trading Post, which closed in 2020.

In 2021, the building was purchased by Dillon Nash, the current proprietor. This is where our journey begins! After a 3 year gut renovation, Dillon is reopening the Stephentown Hotel, 13 years after the original hotel closed. We are hosting a grand opening in 2023. The Stephentown Hotel is a historic gem and Dillon plans to honor the history.

Stephentown has a rich history, dating back to its founding in 1784. The town played a role in the American Revolution, and was home to several notable figures in early American history, including Stephen Van Rensselaer, a prominent landowner and politician. Today, the town is known for its close-knit community and strong sense of local pride. One of the notable features of Stephentown is the Taconic Mountains, which run along the eastern side of the town and provide a scenic backdrop for outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing. The town is also home to several parks and nature preserves, including the Cranston Creek Preserve and the Taconic Ridge State Forest.
